This is so beautifully written, the work of a real writer who know how to make melodies with words and sentences, filling them with every kind of savored detail from memory by adding layer upon layer of concrete sensory delights to the finished essay. This is a story of the best and happiest of times at Christmas, told through vividly remembered details of baking Christmas cookies that melted in your mouth. They were treasured times with your mother to remember always.
How nice that you re-live those Christmases past with tender recollections, and the sure knowledge that the simple pleasures in life mean the most.
😊 Thank you so much for your kind words, John. This essay carries a lot of different emotions for me, and writing it brought me down paths that I have not visited in a long time. It certainly stirred up a longing for those days of Christmas past!
I loved to sleep on the couch of our tiny living room so I could gaze at the lit-up tree until I finally conked out. The tree had those gigantic bulbs that were common in the 60's. My two favorite gifts of all time were The Easy Bake Oven (somehow it managed to bake cakes using only a lightbulb as the heat source) and the Incredible Edible machine, which made edible bugs using a mold and some type of liquid gel. I shudder to think what was in that gel! My parents and their friends were the first taste-tester victims. All I remember is that one tasted like licorice! Oh, and the doll house was a big hit too....the 2-story, metal variety. :)
Haha, believe it or not, this brought back memories for me! I, too, received an Easy Bake Oven one year (it might have been for my birthday) and a Creepy Crawlers kit. Those crawlers weren't edible, but boy were they fun to make.
Love the image of falling asleep while watching the tree. I have a memory of sitting in a chair with my brother a day or two before Christmas and watching the lights while we talked. It's one of my favorite holiday memories. :)

Very special indeed. And as usual, your recollections stir up my own memories in a most pleasant way. Thank you!
So glad you liked it, Cyd!
